Maxwell House Original Roast Coffee Review

[spoiler title=’Click here to read the transcript. ‘ style=’default’ collapse_link=’true’]- Hey, welcome to Coffee Coffee Coffee, your place for average Joe coffee reviews. Today’s coffee is good until the first drop.

– So today we are reviewing Maxwell House’s original roast medium roast. So, just the plain ol’ they’ve got a few different roasts but this is just medium.

– Right, I was reading on their canister this story

– Uh huh.

– About how they came about. There was a hotel called the Maxwell House Hotel, and they were serving this coffee, apparently, in 1892. So the guests were like, “oh, this is great!” and then they ran out and they had to go back to their old roast and the guests complained, so then the Maxwell House Hotel said “let’s serve this coffee only.”

– Yeah.

– And then, that hotel’s probably out of business.

– But we don’t know.

– Yeah.

– Maybe you could Google it.

– But that’s what happened.

– Right.

– So they served that coffee only.

– Right.

– And it has been good to the last drop ever since.

– According to some people. My parents, this is their coffee. They don’t drink anything else, just Maxwell House.

– They take it with them on vacation.

– They even take their coffee maker with them on vacation so that they always have that good ol’ reliable cup of Maxwell House.

– Yeah, you don’t want to end up at a gas station getting good coffee. Or is this good coffee?

– Yeah, so that’s the question. Do we like it?

– Do we? We’ll find out, and so will you.

– Yeah, now there was a time when we would say Folgers is the best coffee–

– Right.

– Back in the day.

– That was our brew.

– When we first started, and we would tell my parents, “no, Folgers is the best” and then they’re like “no, Maxwell House” and they still say Maxwell House is the best but the question is, how is it? Now that we’ve been reviewing coffee for a while.

– Smells like an Amazon delivery.

– Okay, what?

– Cardboard.

– Okay, yeah, it’s–

– Smells like wet cardboard.

– Yeah, it does, and to me it tastes like wet cardboard.

– You’ve had wet cardboard?

-Hasn’t everybody?

-Let me chew on this.

– But everybody has, I think. I think everybody knows, when you say wet cardboard, but you get that, right?

– Yup.

– Yeah.

– I do now. Yeah, the flavor is nonexistent? I mean, there’s flavor.

– Yeah, I get as far as the coffee coffee-ness of it, I don’t get any coffee flavor but I do get cardboard. And mustiness.

– Uh huh, so wet cardboard that was left in the rain and then dried out, and then got rained on again. Got moldy, and then your dog peed on it.

– No, no.

– No? I don’t know what that tastes like, though.

– Yeah, no, it’s just kinda like it, it’s not that bad as far as, it’s not in your face and it’s just–

– Right.

– There have been other coffees where it’s like really, really strongly flavored. This is just a weaker flavor, but to me it does have that cardboarden…

– Yeah, it’s kinda like they’re not trying to offend anybody. They just want like an even flavor so that people go “well, it’s coffee.”

– Right. Yeah.

– But I think the real story is that 125 years ago when they first made it, there wasn’t another coffee. And that’s why those people wanted this one– ’cause there was no other coffee.

– There were no other options.

– Yeah.

– Yeah. So, price on this, this was $3.95.

– Yeah, which is cheap.

– It is, that is really cheap coffee, so, I mean, for that price range, it’s actually, I mean it’s super cheap.

– Yeah.

– I would say we’ve had coffees that are just as cheap like the Barissimo line, those are much better I would say, and they’re just cheap.

– Yeah. Yeah.

– So–

– But, if you’ve gotta serve coffee to a big party–

– Between this and Folgers?

– Maxwell House.

– Yeah.

– Yeah, so if you’ve gotta serve to a big party and you can’t get, like a Barissimo, ’cause you can only get that at ALDI or on Amazon for a lot more money.

– Yeah.

– But you can pick up Maxwell House anywhere–

– Yeah, that’s true.

– So that might be a really cheap coffee that you can get in bulk if you needed a lot of coffee.

– Yeah, but I would just buy a lot of good coffee.

– Yeah, me too.

– Yeah, so I would never buy this again.

– No.

– And I don’t think–

– Unless you wanted just the canister. Buy it and dump out the coffee and just use the canister to store good coffee in.

– Yeah, it’s not my, yeah.

– So probably we would give this, I would think, about a one and a half donuts.

– Yeah, one and a half.

– Because it’s cheap.

– Maybe even two?

– No, I don’t think two.

– Yeah, nah. Yeah, yeah, one and a half.

– One and a half, ’cause we were doing some twos on those other Barissimos which were–

– Yeah.

– You know.

– Yeah.

– So one and a half donuts on this one. Let us know what you think about Maxwell House. Probably you’ve had it before. It’s maybe in your cupboard right now.

– Yeah, yeah, and we don’t judge.

– No, all right, well, until next time.

– Keep grindin’.
