About the review show

Coffee Coffee Coffee was born because Kayla and J.R. were frustrated. They loved coffee, and they loved trying new brands and roasts. But they couldn’t remember which ones they liked. They’d stand in the coffee aisle in the grocery store, hesitating. Starbucks was on sale, but they only had Pike Place. Was that one they liked? $10 seemed like a lot to spend on a bag coffee, but were all the expensive ones better? Were there cheap coffees that were just as good? They wanted to get answers to these questions. So, they decided to start documenting their coffee tasting explorations. They started a YouTube channel and this website in the hopes they could figure out which coffees were the ones to buy, and which ones were the ones to avoid. And they also hoped their light-hearted coffee review videos might brighten someone else’s day.
Our Process
We want to give every coffee we review a fair shake. With that in mind, we drink the coffee several times over the course of a week, and note what flavors we are tasting, and our overall impressions. The only exceptions to this are if we are given a sampler pack to review, in which case we will just review based on that one cup that we get from it. We generally discuss the things we’re tasting in the coffee before we film the review, but we keep our other thoughts about the coffee to ourselves. We don’t rehearse the show, and it’s usually all done in one take. Kayla never knows what J.R. is going to say in the opening clip.
The Donut Rating System
We rate every coffee on a scale of 0 to 5 donuts, with 0 donuts being a completely undrinkable cup of coffee that really shouldn’t even be allowed to be called coffee, and 5 being the best coffee we’ve ever tasted. Generally speaking, we’d only buy coffees again that we rate at 3 or more donuts. While flavor is the most important aspect to us, we also consider price when giving it our donut rating. If a coffee is pricier, we simply expect more, and rate it accordingly. We expect less out of cheaper coffees, but ultimately the flavor needs to be there.
About the creators
Kayla and J.R. Cox are a husband and wife team. They buy the coffees, drink the coffees, take notes about what they’re tasting in the coffees, and then they film themselves drinking and talking about those same coffees. J.R. takes care of the editing of the videos, and then he posts them on YouTube for all the world to see. Kayla helps out by laughing at his jokes, keeping this website updated, and providing tech support in general. It’s a two person show, and they have an absolute blast doing it.
They used to be full time RVers. They also produce a podcast about Living Outside The Box. Kayla’s an artist, an author of The Laid Back Guide to Intermittent Fasting and she also has a YouTube channel and website about how she’s lost over 80 pounds by walking 6 miles every day and eating once a day (also called Intermittent Fasting or OMAD). She also teaches several courses on the topic which are available on Teachable. But really, when you get down to it, they’re both scanners, as defined in Barbara Sher’s book “Refuse to Choose.” They have a ton of different interests, and pursue them all, unashamedly. As it just so happens, coffee is one of those interests.
